A #1 Bestselling Historical Thriller on (UK)

Slave to Fortune is an award-winning historical novel. Tom Cheke’s world is turned upside-down when he is kidnapped from his home by Barbary corsairs during an audacious night raid.

Sold into slavery in seventeenth-century Algiers, Tom carves out a promising, new life only to have it shattered once more. Another twist of fate throws him into the hands of a Scottish knight of the Order of St John and into a turbulent world of ciphers, spies and assassinations.

This is a remarkable account of how a young man comes of age, grasping life from the setbacks of fortune. It is a tale of friendship and reconciliation, of intrigue and deceit, in which trust is betrayed and deep-rooted beliefs and values are cast into doubt.

In Slave to Fortune, DJ Munro skilfully captures a bygone era of galleons and gunpowder as the plot twists from the alleyways of Algiers, through the splendour of Malta and the canals of Venice, to maritime Portsmouth and the rustic charms of the Isle of Wight.

With echoes of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure novel Kidnapped and J. Meade Falkner’s Moonfleet, Slave to Fortune is an uplifting, intelligent book that will spark curiosity and keep readers enthralled.

Suitable for all ages from young adult upwards, Slave to Fortune was a #1 bestseller on (UK) for Historical Thrillers in October 2017 and a #1 bestseller for YA Historical Fiction in April, May and October 2017.

The novel won the Grand Prize for Young Adult fiction at the international Chanticleer Book Awards (2017) and was also a first place winner for historical fiction.

Slave to Fortune edition by DJ Munro Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Very good story, well written with perfect grammar & a complete absence of speeling mistakes, or typos; quite a rare occurence in books. Tom's adventures are stirring and exciting in something of a "Boy's Own style. I think this book would likely appeal to the younger reader. I am an older reader & also enjoyed it very much.
I liked the historical references at the end of the book & appreciate the accuracy of the settings.
Recommended!
All I can say is this book is a wonderful read.. Well done and understandable and each character clearly sticks with you. Some of the books I have read jump around so much and mix characters in so randomly that it is distracting. This book is written by a professional and I hope my book that I am writing will be as well done because of Munro's inspiration to me. The grammar and spelling is top notch too. That was comforting to me who is a critic and an amateur writer/editor. I have been working on my project writing for 41 years as it unfolds before me and now is coming in for a landing.
Main character Tom has much good fortune along the way, probably a little too much. The villains are not very wicked. Some plot lines are predictable but still a twist or two I didn't see coming. It's not full of complicated place names and characters to keep track of, which is a big plus. The story moves along smartly. So it's 5 stars for the writing, adventure, exotic locals, and fun characters. I hope there is more to come from Mr. Munro.
If you are the type of person who wants to know what is over the next hill, around the next corner or what lies beyond the sun set each day this book if for you. I am that type of person, and I guess that is why I served in the U.S. Navy many years ago. So I could see those foreign ports and cities I had only read about. I got to see a lot of them and now 50 odd yrs. later that desire still burns within me. GREAT BOOK.
Wow! What a good read. I just couldn't put it down! This story covers England, France, Italy, and Turkey. The Corsair Ship moves from England and finally lands on the African Coast. It tells how far the Corsair Captain goes to make this money. The English Boy (Tom Cheke) is sold in the slave market and has a leg band with chain. Our hero is fourteen years old and become a slave to a man that was high up in the government there. This boy is very smart and becomes an asset to his master. The "Winds of Time" move Tom to other countries and other Friends and Masters. He does a lot of traveling and finds out who caused all his problems. All I can tell the reader of this book is you are in for a exciting read for sure!
At first this was just another old English adventure that involved sailing (which I love so much) but it turned out to be quite interesting. Made even more interesting by the Epilog which admits this is based on the story written by the main character about his own adventures. Further, the author goes to great lengths to explain the history involved and prove, for the most part, that the story was true or at least many of the occurrences and people in the story had historical existence to back it up. Good job Mr. Munro.
Great Book! The story is primarily about a teenage English boy, Tom, who is kidnapped by Barbary pirates and sold in Algiers as a slave. His life as a slave is fascinating. Lovers of sea stories will enjoy the accounts of life at sea on ships of different nationalities plus naval battles. The ports of Algiers, Valletta, and Venice are described in detail, as are the people who lived there. Along the way, Tom is befriended by two helpful men, the first being a high-ranking official in the Muslim government in Algiers, and the second being a Knight of Saint John who lived in Malta. The Moors and Knights of Saint John, of course, were bitter enemies in the era in which this book is placed, but both men were very influential in his young life. Tom wanted to find his way back to his home on the Isle of Wight to again be with his mother and sister, but there always is doubt as to whether he will ever make it. This apparently true story takes many sudden twists adding much suspense and much danger. It is certainly one of the best books I have read recently.
